Guy Steele utvecklade tillsammans med Gerald Sussman programspråket Scheme. Han är författare av boken Common Lisp the Language (http://www-2.cs.cmu.edu/afs/cs.cmu.edu/project/ai-repository/ai/html/cltl/cltl2.html) och jobbar numera på Sun Microsystems med bl.a. specifikationen av Java. Steele skrev den första porten av TeX (till ITS) 1978. Intressen utanför datorvärlden inkluderar körsång, skådespel och schack.
